Miss Earth 2004 beauties plant trees in Tarlac Ecotourism Park

SITIO PADLANA, Barangay Lubigan, San Jose — Twenty-six of the 70 contenders for the title, Miss Earth 2004, planted mahogany trees Sunday at the 200-hectare Tarlac Ecotourism Park here as part of the environmentally-oriented beauty tilt’s 11-day “Go North” caravan.
Organizers of the pageant said that the other contestants had to proceed to the Subic Bay Freeport Zone (SBFZ) in Olongapo City for a simultaneous activity there.
Nonetheless, among those who joined in the tree-planting here was Filipino-Hungarian Tamera Marie Szijarto, current holder of the Miss Philippines Earth crown and the country’s contestant in the international competition.
This is actually Szijarto’s second time to plant trees at the ecotourism park, which is more than 300 meters above sea level. Last June, she led other current and past title holders of the Miss Philippines Earth in planting mahogany trees here as part of the month-long “Best of Central Luzon” showcase under the “Wow! Philippines” campaign of the Department of Tourism (DOT).
In his welcome message , Gov. Jose Yap said that “what Miss Earth delivers is most significant in these times when, despite our economic, technological and industrial advances, humanity is at risk for the wanton abuse of Mother Nature and the natural resources that it provides us.”
Addressing the contestants, the governor said: “Although the title you are competing for is being considered third after the Miss World and Miss International, the cause in which you were initiated to in this competition will not only last for a lifetime.”
“The beauty of your legacy will be enjoyed by future generations,” Yap added.
Developed out of the province’s local resources, the Tarlac Ecotourism Park here is being promoted as Central Luzon’s “alternative tourist destination,” as the governor explained that it also “compensates for Tarlac being a land-locked area that has no beaches that usually attracts local and foreign tourists.”
He further said that the ecotourism park is Tarlac’s “showcase that we can pursue our objectives for development and economic advancement while at the same time reinvigorating and protecting the beauty of Mother Nature.”
Aside from visiting, planting trees and promoting the Tarlac Ecotourism Park, the Miss Earth delegates also went to Baguio City, Fort Ilocandia in Laoag City, the now-famous Saud Beach resort of Pagudpud in Ilocos Norte.
The museum-like Vigan City in Ilocos Sur, San Fernando City in La Union, Dagupan City and the Hundred Islands of Lingayen in Pangasinan, and Asia’s tallest dam, the San Roque Dam at the edges of the Cordillera mountains in San Manuel, Pangasinan.
The Miss Earth 2004 coronation night will be held on Oct. 24 at the University of the Philippines Theater in Diliman, Quezon City.
